The history of School of Computer Science and Engineering began in 1972
with the establishment of the Computer Science Department,
one of the first computer departments in Korea.

The school has since been playing an important role in the extraordinary growth of Korean IT industry. Its name changed to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 1992, and then to the School of Computer Science and Engineering in 2003. Currently the school consists of 25 academic faculty members, over 80 graduate students, and over 650 undergraduate students. Its main goal is to provide both theoretical and practical aspects of computing and to prepare students for creative career paths in the computer industry or for advanced studies. Research areas include software engineering, computer networking, computing and storage systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, databases, computer vision, multimedia, computer graphics, security, human-computer interaction, and ubiquitous computing. Most graduate students and qualified undergraduate students are involved in various research projects funded by the government and industry.

The goal of our education is to develop an ability to solve engineering problems in computer/software-related research and industry, based on knowledge of fundamental and practical aspects of computer science. The school also educates students to be creative and self-motivated leaders in their specialty fields. The School of Computer Science and Engineering provides B.S., M.S. and Ph.D programs. Qualified graduate and undergraduate students are eligible for financial support through diverse scholarships and research or teaching assistantships.

We believe computer science is a key to finding innovative solutions to the challenging problems facing society today and developing new advances and ideas that will benefit humanity. With science and technology playing a vital role in building a better future for all, we believe that the future of computer science graduates will continue to be bright. From prospective students to research collaborators, I hope you consider joining us on this journey. To all our new students, we in the School of Computer Science and Engineering look forward to working with you to make your education a unique, rewarding and memorable experience.

Chair of the School of Computer Science and Engineering

#NOTE ON THE NAME OF OUR DEPARTMENT/SCHOOL

Our department/school has several names as below, and it may confuse you. The confusion is from the fact that, officially, there are separate Korean name and English name as well as separate names for undergraduate and graduate school, and people often (unofficially) translate the Korean name into English. We hope this note clarifies.

  • "School of Computer Science and Engineering": Undergraduate, official English name.
  • "Department of Computer Science and Engineering": Graduate, official English & Korean name.
  • "School of Software" (소프트웨어학부) unofficial English translation of official Korean name for undergraduate.
